

James Wilson Miller ("Jim"), 83, of Brentwood, Tennessee, passed away on Monday February 22, 2021 after battling Dementia. Jim was born on August 21, 1937 in Hickman County, TN to the late James and Thelma Miller. He grew up in the Primm Springs area before moving to Coffee County, TN where he attended and played football and basketball at Manchester Central High School. He declined a basketball scholarship from Centre College to enter the U.S. Marine Corps in 1957. He was stationed at the Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C. where he earned distinction as a Sharpshooter and was discharged at the rank of Sergeant in 1960. He moved to Nashville where he worked briefly for the Elder Book Company before marrying Carmie Miller and beginning work for the Railroad. He began as a switchman with the L&N R.R and spent most of his career in Nashville’s Radnor Yards witnessing mergers with the Seaboard Coast Line, Chessie, and CSX railroads until his retirement as Assistant Terminal Superintendent in 2002.
He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and was a member of Concord Road Church of Christ in Brentwood, TN most of his adult life. Jim loved God, his family, helping others, fishing, gardening, the Tennessee Volunteers, and playing with his grandchildren. Soft-spoken, few of his friends knew he was named a Colonel in the Tennessee State Militia by former Gov. Ned McWherter.
He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Thelma Miller, his devoted wife of 54 years, Carmie Clifton Miller, and sisters Vallie Mae Brawner, Audra Fly, and Marie Herndon. He is survived by his sons James Mitchell Miller (wife Holly) of Middleburg, FL, by Jason Matthew Miller (wife Cara) of Clarksville, TN; by three grandchildren, James Andrew Miller, Reagan Mattison Miller, and Matthew Ethan Miller, and by his sister Dorothy Garrick.
Visitation will be Sunday, February 28, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. A graveside service is planned for 2:00 p.m.
