He is preceded in death by his parents, John Morgan “Sonny” Gossett and Ramona Oakley Gossett.
Gavin is survived by his daughter, Ellison Gossett and son, Aslan Gossett, sister, Michelle Lasley (Tom), brother Jeremy Gossett (Katie), and nieces and nephews, Will Lasley, Anna Lasley, and Autumn Tucker. He is also survived by many Oakley and Flippen extended family, an overabundance of beloved friends including his gaming brothers, fellow bluegrass musicians, and his adopted dachshund, Fonz von Richtofen.
Gavin was born March 19, 1964 and spent most of his life living in Donelson, TN. He graduated from McGavock High School in 1982 and earned his degree in Finance and Pumpkin Carving from Freed-Hardeman University in 1987. Gavin was a drummer for the McGavock High School band and was regionally famous in college for his musical comedy troupe “Three Large and Very Serious Guys.” He worked most of his life in the mortgage industry but for several years fulfilled his dream as the owner and operator of Games Extraordinaire. Gavin’s alter ego, Tubby Candles, moonlighted as a bluegrass bass player for The Nashville Hayriders which landed him the occasional opportunity to play with some of Nashville’s finest musicians.
Gavin was an unpredictable jester and captivating storyteller, who was abundantly altruistic to a fault, routinely procrastinating (likely to be late to his own memorial), and quick to serenade a person into a room just to make them feel welcomed. He would give a friend his last dollar followed by the lint from his pocket along with his pants, just for giggles.
Gavin was gregarious, had a boisterous personality, and would improve the ambiance of any gathering. He cherished his role as a father to two amazing young adults, was a devoted caregiver to both of his parents, relentlessly adored his family, and impacted countless lives. He was a devout Christian, passionate about music, comics, board games and family.
In the most divine manner, moments after Gavin’s passing, a lullaby echoed throughout the hospital as a new baby was born. A life had serendipitously entered the world as one peacefully left it behind. Gavin would probably say, “Please don’t cry because I’m gone; but instead be happy that I was here. Today, I am happy, singing and dancing”... and probably doing so naked
