
Judy Jean Chapman, 83, a generous and long time leader in the Vanderbilt medical community passed away on September 8, 2025. She was born on November 18, 1941, in Nashville, the only child of the late M.E. and Julia Cox.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John E. Chapman, who served as Dean of the Vanderbilt School of Medicine for 25 years. Judy Jean earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at Vanderbilt in 1963, receiving the Founder’s Medal in Nursing for graduating first in her class. She went on to earn her Master’s degree from the University of Florida in 1966, after which she returned to Vanderbilt to join the faculty of the School of Nursing. Her specialty was maternal-infant nursing.
Mrs. Chapman authored numerous articles published in peer-reviewed journals. Her clinical practice and research centered on breastfeeding and parent education. She also served as clinical editor of Perinatal Nursing, a book that was later translated into Spanish and French. In the early 1980s, she served as Interim Dean of the Vanderbilt School of Nursing.
She later earned her EMT certification and joined the Vanderbilt School of Medicine faculty, where she offered electives in emergency medical services. She became a Senior Associate in the Department of Emergency Medicine. A teaching award in that department was named in honor of both Mrs. Chapman and her husband. Additionally, a quadrangle at the Vanderbilt Medical Center bears their names.
Through the years, she and Dr. Chapman graciously opened their home to their beloved medical students, creating a greater sense of community, while inspiring them to excellence in their chosen field.
Mrs. Chapman retired as Emeritus Professor at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. She also served on numerous boards and committees throughout Middle Tennessee, as well as on an international research board.
She enjoyed watching her Vanderbilt football and baseball teams, lovingly cared for her many beautiful orchids and other plants, and cherished her many travels .
Mrs. Chapman is survived by her godsons, Cory (Angel Rose) Stratton and Evan Stratton.
