After serving in the U.S. Army, he joined his father in the hardwood lumber business for 11 years. In 1953, Karl and Reese Smith, Jr. founded Haury & Smith. A loyal friend to all, he received great pleasure from his family relationships and personal friendships, many of which were with people he came to know through his real estate and development business as well as his association with Vanderbilt University's Athletic Department where he served as President of the National Commodore Club. He was an avid sportsman and traveled extensively to enjoy hunting and fishing and loved being able to share many of those times with his son and grandsons. His accomplishments were
many but he will also be remembered as a truly caring, considerate and thoughtful gentleman, loving his family and friends and giving back because he felt he was so fortunate in life.
