

Kathryn (Kay) Macfarlane Matter, 88, was preceded in death by her parents Helen and Stuart Macfarlane. Survivors include husband of 59 years, Frank, Nashville, TN; sister Janet Ruth Gosnell, Hermitage, PA; daughters Beth Matter, Nashville; Mary Matter-Harris, Charlottesville, VA; and Laura (Glenn) Fukushima, Dedham, MA; grandchildren Emelie Harris, Andrew Harris, Celia Fukushima, Marcus Fukushima; and other extended family.
Kathryn was born in Oil City, PA and grew up in Franklin, PA. She and her sister Janet discovered baton twirling at an early age and became majorettes for the Franklin High School Band, with Kathryn as head majorette. They won an International Baton Twirling Federation Championship and also performed with the Franklin Silver Cornet Band. Kathryn continued as a majorette at Grove City College. The sisters also opened a baton twirling school. Kathryn enjoyed international travel with her sister and had a successful career in human resources at Joy Manufacturing in Franklin.
The family moved to Nashville, and she was a homemaker and excellent cook. She loved her many dogs. She continued traveling, and enjoyed the beach, tap dancing, reading, and gardening. She rediscovered her love of painting and took it to a new level. She was a member of the Tennessee Art League, serving as treasurer, and sold many of her paintings.
Memorial donations may be made to the animal welfare organization of your choice.
Visitation will be 4-6 pm, Saturday, July 22, and 10 am-12 noon, Sunday, July 23, followed by a service and burial, at Mt. Olivet Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1101 Lebanon Pike, Nashville.
