She was born and raised in Sumner County and lived with her parents and seven siblings. Her father delivered all eight children in their home. They lived on a working farm where they grew everything they ate. She said that they did buy coffee, sugar , fabric and gasoline. They had no indoor plumbing until after she was married. From reading a match book cover, she discovered a school in Chicago that was accredited to assist students earning their GED.

She liked to travel. She traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, France, Italy, England, Wales, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Greece and to islands in the Caribbean.
