Marjorie Gowens Hutchison (Margie) died peacefully at age 91 of natural causes on April 28, 2025 and is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Margie was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. She was predeceased by her parents Mabel Nowlin Gowens and Ratio (Ray) Gowens.
Margie loved music and it all began at age 5 when her father gave her a piano for her birthday. She began taking piano lessons, along with dance lessons including ballet and tap, and soon excelled at both. She attended Hillsboro High School where she was the accompanist for the choral group and all school assemblies. Margie was on the Honor Roll all four years, the Girls Vice President of the Student Body, Captain of the Cheerleaders, Prom Queen attendant her sophomore and junior years and Prom Queen as a senior. At graduation she received the DAR Youth Citizenship Medal, which is presented to the student who exemplifies the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism.
Margie attended Vanderbilt University and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Her sophomore year she was in the Women’s Glee Club and selected to the honorary Lotus Eater Club. While at Vanderbilt, she married William H. Teas, II, (deceased) and they had three children. She was a member of the Junior League of Nashville. She was an active member of the Fannie Battle and the McNeely Day Home as well as the Pi Beta Phi Alumni Club assisting in the annual Christmas Village.
Margie had a lifelong career with children of all ages. She began as a kindergarten teacher at Westminster Presbyterian Church for 4 years, then spent 18 years with 3 and 4-year-olds at St. Georges Episcopal Church kindergarten. It was there she played the piano for the pageants and plays for all the classes. She taught private piano lessons for children ages 6 and older at home for over 26 years. Around 1967 she began teaching ballroom dancing to 6th and 7th graders at the Fortnightly Club. Given the opportunity to own the business after the retirement of the prior owners, the business grew with more and more students attending. By the 43rd year, it was time to close the doors and retire herself.
In October 1972, she married William Turner Hutchison, III, who had three children; Kathy H. Clayton, W. Turner Hutchison, IV and Ashley H. Hutchison. She and Turner were founding members of Christ Presbyterian Church. Turner was an avid hunter and soon taught her how to shoot dove. She let the “boys” do all the duck and deer hunting without her. Over the next 11 years they traveled across the world to Spain, Hawaii, Acapulco, California, London, Colorado, Dubrovnik, Las Vegas, Canada, Puerto Rico, England, Scotland, Wales, Portugal and Yugoslavia. Their favorite place was closer to home at Fairfield Glade in Crossville, TN. They spent two weeks there each year and enjoyed walking, fishing, antiquing and the outdoors. They were active in Sunday school and a couple’s bridge group and were married for 19 years before his death in 1991.
In February 2012, she married Dr. G. William Davis who was a retired orthopedic surgeon. Together they shared the love of music and sang in the Christ Presbyterian Church choir. They could also be seen dancing together at the summer concerts in Centennial Park. They enjoyed their Bible study small group fellowships and regular dinner with friends each week before his untimely death in March 2015.
Margie will be greatly missed by her family, friends and caregivers. Her smile will be remembered by everyone who loved her. Margie is survived by her three children, Marjorie Rebecca (“Becky”) Teas Kantz, Kathie Teas Lesesne, and William (“Bill”) H. Teas, III, and wife Pam, and also by Ashley H.
