Mary W. Herring

Mary W. Herring - age 84, passed away Friday, May 20, 2011. She is predeceased by her parents, Claude W. and Mamie Whitehead, her husband of fifty years, Robert W. Herring, Sr., brothers, Rev. Claude W. Whitehead, Jr. and Dr. John Sellers Whitehead, sister, Eugenia Whitehead, and grandson, John Philip Herring.

Survivors are her sons Dr. Robert W. Herring, Jr. (Sheila), John Edward Herring (Anita), three grandchildren Annie, Bert, and Helen all of Nashville. She is also survived by her beloved dog, Napoleon.

Born Friday, November 19, 1926 in Sherman Texas, she was raised in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated magna cum laude from Birmingham-Southern College, where she met her husband. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and received a fellowship to study at Duke University where she obtained a master’s in French. She taught school until she had her children. In 1967 the family moved to Nashville where she resumed her career, first in teaching and then as an administrative assistant to a judge in the Social Security Administration.

Funeral services will be 10:00 Thursday, May 26, 2011 in Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall with Bishop Robert Spain officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
