

Orin Moe, Jr. died suddenly on November 14, 2023, in Nashville, TN. Orin was born in Grosse Pointe, MI to Orin Moe, Sr. and Grace Moe. He was the youngest of four children. His family moved to several different cities before finally settling in Pacific Palisades, CA. Orin attended Mount St. Mary’s college, followed by UC Santa Barbara, where he earned his PhD in Music History.
Orin taught music history at Fresno State University, Georgia State University, and Vanderbilt University. His area of interest was black composers of the 20th century. He also was a knowledgeable wine collector and taught classes on wine selection.
Orin loved a good book, and could devour a book a day. He often read multiple books at a time. He absolutely adored animals and had many beloved pets through the years, including dogs, cats, and birds. His eyes lit up when he spoke about his children and grandchildren.
Orin is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Cynthia, son from his first marriage, Erik Moe, daughter, Catherine Daker (Rashad), grandchildren Griffin Moe, Shelby Moe, Maryam Daker, and Nadya Daker, sister Connie Shonafelt, and many extended family.
