

Above all, Richard cherished his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Joy, whom he met at the Wesley Foundation at MTSU where he was the campus minister. They married in 1967 and were married 58 years. Other survivors include his son, Colin; his daughter, Kendal; his son-in-law; Todd Cathey; and the joy of his life, his two grandchildren, Katherine Mercedes and Kennedy McKenzie.
His parents, Judge Thomas Abraham & Attie Gene Shriver, and his brothers Judge Thomas H. Shriver, Don A. Shriver, preceded him in death.
He also leaves behind many friends, students, parishioners, and colleagues whose lives were forever changed by his kindness, wisdom, humor, and unwavering faith.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, November 7th, 1933, Richard was the second of three sons born to Thomas A. Shriver and Attie Gene Shriver. His father, Thomas A. Shriver, was a highly respected and honored judge of the Tennessee Court of Appeals. Richard’s lifelong love of learning began in the Nashville public school system and continued throughout his distinguished academic career.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University, followed by his Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt as well. Answering his calling to ministry, Richard became an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church and faithfully served churches in Tennessee, Wisconsin, and England for over thirty-two years. His passion for faith, education, and understanding never ceased, leading him to pursue advanced studies in History, Music, and Christian Education through Vanderbilt University, Peabody College, Scarritt College, Wisconsin State University, and Middle Tennessee State University. He later earned his doctorate in Education and Theology from the Vanderbilt University Divinity School.
Richard devoted much of his life to teaching and mentoring others. He retired as Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee, where he inspired generations of students through his wisdom, compassion, and thoughtful approach to faith and philosophy. He also served as an Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee.
Beyond the classroom and pulpit, Richard shared his voice and insight through radio and television. He was a regular guest on Nashville’s Channel 5, Lebanon’s Channel 66, WLAC Radio, and WNQM Radio’s “We Believe.” He also co-hosted Nashville CATV’s “We Believe,” bringing thoughtful spiritual discussion and encouragement to audiences throughout Middle Tennessee.
An accomplished author, Richard published his first book, The Gabriel Letters, in 1990, reflecting his deep spirituality and gift for thoughtful reflection.
Richard Vernon Shriver leaves behind a legacy of learning, ministry, compassion, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
He was known for his HOT pots of tea, Saturday brunch, born again virgin group; where laughter, storytelling, and friendship were always abundant. He also treasured his beloved yearly New Year’s Eve party and communion, traditions that reflected his deep love for fellowship, faith, and bringing people together.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday May 29th, 2026 at 12:30 at Belmont United Methodist church. Visitation with the family will start at 11:00 preceding the service.
