Ruth was born in Nashville on Elkins Avenue to Franklin M. and Trudell Littrell Storey. She attended Sylvan Park Elementary School, Cavert Junior High School, and West End High School, graduating in 1948. Ruth was, at the time of her admittance, the youngest voice student to study at Blair School of Music. She continued to sing and enjoy music all her life.
On a blind date in high school, she met Orie Bennett Sims. He was a little older and had served in the Philippines during World War II; he attended David Lipscomb College on the G.I. Bill. They were smitten with each other and married on November 23, 1949. They had been married nearly 64 years when Orie left this life in November 2013.
Survivors include their two children, Benita Ruth Sims (John Mitchell) and Joseph Bennett Sims (Lori York), and two grandchildren, Jackson Bennett Sims and Tomi Leanne Sims (soon to be married to Gunner Schierling).
Ruth worked most of her life, including at Broadway National Bank as a secretary and teller, as a personal shopper at Cain Sloan’s Department Store, and as a switchboard operator. She was fortunate enough to be able to be a stay-at-home mother for several years when her children were young. Her final employment was with benefits consulting firm Aid Associates, where she rose from part-time administrative assistant to office manager.
Ruth was a devout Christian and a founding member of Glencliff Presbyterian Church in Nashville. She also was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Ruth was a talented soprano and sang in the choirs of both churches. She also was a vocalist with several local musical groups and did sessions and demo work for numerous artists.
After Ruth retired, she enjoyed traveling and made trips to Alaska, Canada’s Maritime Provinces, and the Panama Canal, to name a few highlights. She enjoyed sewing, adored her family, and was a devoted grandmother.
She will be greatly missed.
