Sara Wyatt Cofield Hurt, lovingly known as “Mimi”, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at the age of 101, surrounded by her children. Sara was born on October 20, 1921 to Lonza William and Shellie Hendon Cofield in Randolph County, (Newell) Alabama and was raised in Birmingham, AL.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Crawford Hurt and her brother, William Hendon Cofield. Sara is survived by her two daughters, Celeste Hurt and Denise Hawkins; her granddaughter, Jessica Hawkins (Brett) Andersen, and two great grandchildren, Mena and Boyce Andersen. Sara is also survived by her sister-in-law Cathy Cofield (Norcross, GA), and many beloved nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.
Entering college at the age of 16, Sara received her Bachelors of Science degree in Nutrition and Chemistry from Samford University and her Masters degree in Nutrition from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. When she moved to Nashville in the 1950s, she was Director of Food and Nutrition Services for many years at St. Thomas Hospital. She then served as Executive Dietitian for Aladdin Industries, and finally as Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning at United Service Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Murfreesboro, TN. She was a member of many professional organizations over the years and traveled all over the globe as it related to her career in Food Service Design & Management. She retired in 2001 at the age of 80.
Sara, a voracious reader, loved all books. She was fond of all creatures, great and small (except snakes!). She took special delight in butterflies. She adored her granddaughter Jessica and always concluded their visits with “I love you the most!” She especially enjoyed her volunteer days at the This and That Thrift shop and she cherished the many dear friends she made during her time with them.
The family would like to recognize her long-time friends Roger Yates, Sue Ashley, the Lipschutz family, John C Davis and Julie Huong for their many years of friendship, love and support. Special heartfelt thanks to her personal physician, Dr. Edwin Anderson and nurse, Maria Villagomez. Our gratitude to Mark Davis for his frequent visits and the outstanding biscuits he shared. We would also like to recognize Amanda Riley, Angela Clark, Amanda Coleman, Megan Oliver and Stacy McGuinn for their encouragement and excellent care along with the entire staff and volunteers of Alive Hospice.
