Sarah was born in Cedar Hill, Tennessee to William Rawls Conley and Georgia May Batts. She grew up on the family farm with her siblings and cousins. Sarah earned her undergraduate degree in education from Peabody in Nashville and later earned her master’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She spent much of her working life as an elementary school teacher, a profession she took seriously and cared deeply about. She was known by her students as someone who paid attention, expected effort, and genuinely cared about how they were doing.
On June 9, 1973 Sarah married the love of her life, William Rowan. Together they enjoyed golfing and traveling, valuing shared time and experiences with one another and their family. A lifelong Catholic, Sarah attended St. Henry’s Church and found comfort and meaning in her faith throughout her life. Sarah was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Sarah is survived by her stepchildren Elizabeth Taylor and William Rowan (Julianne); her grandchildren Cody (Yasmin), Blake, Joshua and Bonnie; her nieces Mary Lou Vann (Bill), Anna Gilman (Craig) and Jane Davis (Steve); as well as several great-grandchildren and multiple great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Georgia May Conley; her husband William Rowan; her siblings James Conley, George William Conley and Sue Peterson; and her granddaughter, Meghan Taylor McGuire.
A visitation will be held at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville, on January 23, beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by a service at 2:30 p.m. A procession to the graveside will follow the service.
