

Sue was born in Clarksville, Tennessee where she lived until the age of 6. Her family then moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Sue was a descendent of Moses Winters, who arrived with James Robertson at the founding of Nashville. Her family then settled in Robertson County. Sue was the daughter of James Henry Winters and Mildred Chesnut Winters.
Upon moving to Nashville, she attended the Woodmont School, home of many of her childhood friends. She later attended Ward-Belmont Preparatory School as a member of its last graduating class. Sue attended Vanderbilt University, earning a B.A. degree in English and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was a lifelong Vanderbilt sports fan! Sue married William I. Edwards III in 1956.
Sue served in many local organizations, such as the Nashville City Panhellenic Council (President 1960), Belmont Mansion Association (Board member and President, 1981), Fannie Battle Social Workers (Board member and Life member), Centennial Club (President 1985 - 1987), Life member Polk Memorial Association, Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee (President 2001 - 2003), West End United Methodist Church (Former Sunday school teacher and member of Administrative Board), Timberlee Garden Club, Sow’n Grow Club, Cheekwood Ladies’ Heritage Association, and Auxiliary to the Salvation Army.
In addition to this, she was recently awarded the Lifetime Achievement award for the Horticultural Society Middle Tennessee as a past President.
Sue is survived by her sons James Donelson (Jim) Edwards (Stephanie) and Dr. David Callender Edwards (Ashley). As well, she is survived by nephew Richard Sidney (Dick) Koonce III, niece Nancy Elizabeth (Betsy) Sotteck. Her grandchildren include Samuel Winters Edwards (Laura Beth), John Herbert (Jack) Edwards, David Foster Edwards, and Jacob Page (Jake) Edwards.
A memorial service will be held at the Blakeford Senior Living Community on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am with a Memorial Service at 11:30 am. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery will follow at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the Family has asked that memorials be sent to West End United Methodist Church or the staff of the Blakeford Senior Living Community, both in Nashville, Tennessee.
