Thomas Michael Dorman

Tommy was born in Nashville, TN on December 4, 1931, to the late Carmen Ersel and Louise Ann Wilson Dorman. He was also preceded in death by his brothers and their wives: Carmen Ersel Jr., Jack Lawson (Adeline Lafferty), and Gary Wakefield (Wilma Holton); and, by nephew Gary Wakefield, Jr., (Vicki Clark). Tommy is survived by his wife of 58 years, June Hogan Dorman and by nieces Jackie Dorman (Don Perkins), Merrie Skinner (Ken Land) and nephews Stan Skinner (Laurie Amenold) and Lane Skinner.

After serving in the U. S. Army, Signal Corps, Tommy joined the Nashville Police Department in 1956 and served in three divisions, Patrol, Traffic (including its Motorcycle unit), and retired in 1989 as a Lieutenant in the Youth Guidance division.

Civil service and law enforcement were a four-generation family tradition in Davidson County. Tommy’s grandfather, John E. Wilson (1867-1949), after serving as a constable and a railroad special agent, worked as a private detective and gathered evidence for some of Nashville’s most famous criminal court trials. His father, “Big Jim” Dorman, was a member of the

Nashville Police Department’s first Radio Motor Patrol in 1936. His brother Gary joined the Nashville Police Department and retired as a Sergeant in the Patrol Division. His nephew, Gary, Jr., who thought police work was too dangerous, joined the Nashville Fire Department and retired in 2011 as a Captain who had special training in Hazardous Materials.

Visitation 10 a.m., Thursday, June 22, 2017, followed by service at 11 a. m. at Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home, 201 25th Avenue, North, Nashville. Telephone 615 327-1111. Metro Police Chaplain will officiate. Honorary Pallbearers will be Metro Police Retirees. Burial will be with at the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, McCrory Lane, at 1 p.m.
