Born on a Pleasant Ridge, TN working farm in 1928, Vesta was the tenth of eleven children. It must have been cloudy on that ground hog day when she came into this world, because I’m sure that spring came early that year. To her it was always spring. She had a special love for Nature and growing things. On the farm she helped grow almost any crop that could be grown in middle Tennessee. As an adult her gardens were full, lush and always beautiful. Her love of nature and conservation extended beyond the garden as she worked with the Boy Scouts and later helped to establish and operate the Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association to protect the natural streams of Tennessee. When you asked her what were her most significant contributions: her response was not her conservation activities but her faith and her family. She would tell you that she gave birth to three sons, but she raised four boys: the fourth being her husband William “Billy” Griswold. Billy and Vesta had a romance that lasted 69 years and included travels to the far corners of the earth. She maintained a perfectly clean house, but when the grandchildren visited, all of her loving focus was on them. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and especially her husband will miss her, but we all praise God that she is now whole and complete.
Please donate to your own charities in Vesta’s name in lieu of Flowers.
