In the early 80's Coach Shelton made a lifelong impact on so many young men here in Ohio County. We are a small basketball crazy Kentucky  town,  even though we had a football program for many years, we had never had a winning season. Football is a tough sport, but if taught properly, football is a life sport. By this I mean the lessons taught to me by coach I still apply today some 40 years later. For example I can still hear that Tennessee twang " Robert, always remember misery loves company"   I have never forgotten this. I have mentored kids for many years, and to this day i still apply the life lessons taught to me by my coach. hahahahaha, He also gave me the worst paddling I had ever had. Ohio County had its first winning season in 1980, we had winning seasons in 82, 83, 84. 8 young men, including my self were offered college scholarships. Many men on my team eventually became High School football coaches because of the impact Coach had. His legacy at Ohio County is still  felt. Rest easy coach, and I am so thankful to have spoken to you often over the years. Even a few months  before coach passed he was still coaching me about life. I am a better man, because Billy Shelton was a part of my life. 

Billy and I were childhood friends, growing up, on the same street, in Woodbine. We meet in the third grade, when Glencliff Elementary School, opened it's doors. The summers, fall and winters made "0" difference, to Billy and me, we were always together. Two kids just hanging out, in our neighborhood, on Vaden Dr. 
Billy's parents Mr. and Mrs. Shelton were like a second set, of parents.  We played some kind of ball, in their back yard, all year round.  As two best buds, we were in and out, of their home constantly.  I always felt welcome and at home, at the Shelton's. 
Billy and I were in school together, from the 3rd grade through 12th grade, plus another year or two, at Tennessee Tech University.  After our days at Tech, Billy and I didn't see each other much, in those years following, our days at GHS. We would see each other or talk to each other, from time to time. My love and carrying, for Billy never left me. He became an excellent teacher and an outstanding football coach. Coaching was Billy passion, he had a great handle, on the game.
Billy coached at DCA, in Donelson, TN for a while, during the time our son, Scot attended and played football, in the mid 90's. Billy was one of Scot's coaches during this time. I knew Billy would work and encourage Scot, to do his very best, as Billy had always coached his young men. As a dad and a close friend, of Billy Shelton, this coaching and player journey was very, very special, to me and my wife. Thanks Bill, Scot loved you, too!
I have lost,"my friend", of some 60 plus years and I will miss him. There is no greater gift, for some of us, to have had a friend, from our childhood, a true "blessing". Billy, "Rest In Peace," my old friend! I will pray, for your family and may our Lord comfort them, in these next days, weeks and years.

I knew Coach Shelton from DCA, and in addition to being a good football coach he was also an excellent teacher. I had him for biology my sophomore year, and he knew the material like it was the back of his hand. During each class he had the lecture notes on the overhead and would explain each point in detail. At times I felt like I was in college already since his lectures were that good.  Rest in peace Coach.  

Always remember Billy as the voice of reason within a small group of Glencliff graduates who shared times after graduation.  Thoughts and prayers for the family may he Rest In Peace. 

Billy and I were good friends at Glencliff High School but never really “hung” out together.  He didn’t play football and I did not know he really cared about the game.  We played Litton High in our undefeated senior year but tied 0 -0.  The football players were all dejected and heads hanging low after the game we expected to easily win.  Walking back to the locker room after the game, Billy came running up to me and said, “you played a hell of a game” in a real excited way.  I then realized Billy knew football and I truly appreciated that he was watching me in a non-winning game..  RIP Billy.  I’ve missed you since our high school days..
