It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Dawn Stasiuk on April 13, 2026, at the age of 70, after a long illness at Bethesda Regional Health Centre.
Barb will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 51 years, Steve Stasiuk; her daughters, Rebecca (Harland) and Melissa; her grandchildren, Kassandra, Liam, and Jacob; her greatgrandson Sylas; her brother, James; her sisters, Cindy (Art) and Crystal (Steve); as well as many nieces and nephews.
Barb was predeceased by her father, James Oliver Shand; her mother, June Elizabeth Shand; her stepfather, Charles Dawson Shand; and her sister, Elizabeth Toner.
Barb was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but lived in Selkirk, Ottawa, and Winnipeg. However, Pointe du Bois was where she grew up and met the love of her life. Barb and Steve were married in Pointe du Bois on June 15, 1974, and it always remained a special place in their hearts, where they would eventually retire.
Barb and Steve’s life together began with whispers of an impending baby due to their fast courtship and “shotgun” wedding. However, their first daughter, Rebecca, didn’t make her appearance for 13
months. Four and a half years later, they completed their family with the birth of Melissa. Barb and Steve bought their first home in East Kildonan in 1980. Barb was a “domestic engineer” until the girls were “big and ugly” enough to take care of themselves, at which point she pursued part-time work outside the home.
In 2001, Barb and Steve embarked on an adventure and moved to Edmonton, where Barb continued to work until her retirement. During their eight and a half years in Edmonton, they made many
wonderful friends, including Barb’s “twin,” Sue Howell. Although they built a full life in Edmonton, they were drawn back to their roots and built their semi-retirement home in Pointe du Bois to be
closer to Barb’s mother and stepfather.
Barb and Steve lived in Pointe du Bois for 16 years before deciding to move one last time to a quiet retirement village in Mitchell, Manitoba. Over the years, Barb enjoyed travelling with Steve, as well
as with friends and family, mostly throughout the United States, until they found their winter home in Magic Valley Park in Weslaco, Texas. For the last five to six years, they spent at least part of each
winter there, making new friends and staying warm, far away from Winnipeg’s cold winters.
Over the years, Barb maintained a few favourite pastimes, including fishing, bowling, knitting dishcloths for friends, and sitting by the fire with Steve, friends, and family while enjoying a glass of her favourite wine. She also enjoyed supervising the log splitting—controlling the lever while Steve did the heavy lifting—ensuring they had enough wood to keep the house feeling like it was 80 degrees.
A Celebration of Barb's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1, at Green Acres Funeral Home, 1 Green Acres Lane, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Steve and the girls will hold a private interment at a later
date.
The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and healthcare aides who took care of Barb while she was in the hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barb’s name to a charity of your choice.
