Charles Phillip McKay (Charlie)
April 16, 1947-February 12, 2025
It is with very heavy hearts and much love that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Charles Phillip McKay (Charlie).
Charlie passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at the age of 77.
He will be lovingly remembered by his loving wife, Dorothy Owens, his children, Scott McKay (Ali), Mike McKay (Lisa), Kelsey McKay (Johnathan), Joel McKay, Julie McKay, Kacey McKay (Monica), Ian McKay, Lockie McKay, and Antwain McKay. He also leaves treasured grandchildren, Mielah, Brynn, Ella, Madison, and Olivia. He is survived by his sister Joan (Terry) as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other family members. Charlie is predeceased by his parents, Charles Harold and Julia Veronica McKay and his siblings, Harold, James, Margret, Gerald, and Jim.
Charlie was born in Morden, MB and grew up in Manitou, MB on a farm with his parents and siblings where he had many fond memories. Once he graduated high school, he left Manitou to travel and worked many different professions before going to the University of Manitoba where he got his Bachelor of Education. He then started his career as a Phys-ed teacher. He had an incredibly positive influence on many of the students he taught. He eventually became a teacher in Pauingassi First Nation where he started a life and met the love of his life, Dorothy and they began growing their family. Charlie went on to start a business running a general store (DOJO) which would then become his lifelong career as an entrepreneur. He later built a cabin in Whitesand Estates with the help of his two eldest sons and many of their friends which became his permanent home with his family.
Charlie loved reading with a passion (often having several books going at once), he enjoyed watching many sports (mainly hockey) with his many children, and you could hear his ‘coaching’ from the comfort of his couch. He also attended all sporting events his children and grandchildren participated and coached a few of their teams. He loved to spend his summer days outside tending to his trees, grass, taking his dogs for long walks and playing baseball with the family. Charlie was a lover of cherry ice cream, travelling and the Montreal Canadians.
Charlie loved and adored Dorothy, his children and grandchildren. They were his world. He often said his favorite time of the year was Christmas as it gathered all his family under one roof at the same time.
Charlie had an extremely strong work ethic, was highly motivated, and believed in tough love. He was always there for family and had an open ear when you needed to talk. He would always listen with patience and give his honest advice. Charlie will always be loved and greatly missed by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life with be held at Green Acres Funeral Home & Cemetery located at 1 Green Acres Lane, Navin, MB on March 5th, 2025 at 2 pm.
