Ms. Charlotte Garrett Mackin

May 17, 1911 – April 3, 2010

After a long and well loved life, in the presence of family, Charlotte passed away early Saturday evening.

Charlotte was predeceased by her husband James Mackin and to her great sadness, her only son Norman James Mackin.

She is survived by her daughter–in-law June Mackin, grandson Roy and his wife Michele, grandson Paul and grandson Norman and his spouse Stephanie; and her great-grandchildren, Jonathon, Andrew and Alyssa. Others who will miss Charlotte include self-adopted sons and daughters-in-law , Frank Pauls of Port Coquitlam and Richard Pauls of Winnipeg, and their respective wives Margaret and Shirley, Carol and Bernard Sebastian of Port Coquitlam, Edna Pauls of Liverpool, countless nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews in England and friends from Winnipeg, Ste. Anne and Steinbach, MB.

Charlotte was born in Liverpool, England to her mother Charlotte (nee Barrington) and father John Garrett and grew up in a large family. Charlotte married James Mackin and had one son, Norman James Mackin. Charlotte and her husband James moved to Canada in 1970 to join and live with her only son, and daughter-in-law – an arrangement that lasted some 40 years. Along the way, good health and a will of iron were a constant.

Charlotte personified the British term “keep a stiff upper lip”. For almost six years during WWII, she lived as a single, working mother in Liverpool while her husband (James Mackin) served in the British Army. She never complained about what life was or was not as she believed her life was planned.

Charlotte spent the last 25 years of her life making frequent trips to Liverpool to visit siblings. Her last trip was at the age of 94. As it turned out, she was the last survivor amongst her siblings.

Charlotte had one main interest in life, FAMILY. If she was with the “lads” she was content. Even if the lads were approaching 50.

Gran will be missed by all who knew her. It is our sincerest hope she knows just how much she is loved.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 24th, 2010., at Green Acres Funeral Home.
