On June 21, 2013 Doug Thompson passed away peacefully after succumbing to lung cancer. He will be deeply missed by his children, daughter Lynn Riddell and her partner Bryan Halley, his son Duke Thompson and Duke’s wife Pia and his grandchildren Lea Riddell, Sophia and Gregory Thompson. He will also be missed by brothers-in-law Paul Phaneuf (Lucille), Roger Phaneuf (Lucille), George Miller and Scotty Brocklehurst and many nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his wife Yvette Thompson nee Phaneuf, sisters Ethel Brocklehurst and Dorothy Miller and brother Donald Thompson.
Doug was born in Fort Rouge on May 13, 1930, the youngest child of Dorothy and Duke Thompson. He grew up during the depression on Clarke Street attending school and holding down a variety of part-time jobs in the Fort Rouge neighbourhood. He was employed for thirty eight years as a Master Painter with the Canadian National Railway.
Doug married the love of his life Yvette in April of 1958. They resided in St. Vital where they raised their family, doing countless renovations on their home.
He enjoyed fishing with friends and family – and especially loved fresh pickerel. His passion for gardening benefitted all those that reaped its rewards. Doug was an excellent cook and no one made better pastry than his. Eating a slice of one of Doug’s pies was always a treat. And many enjoyed a glass of his homemade wine.
After Doug’s retirement in 1985, he and Yvette purchased and then retrofitted a travel van. They travelled and camped all across Canada and the United States, going as far north as Dawson, Yukon and as far south as Key West Florida.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Saturday, June 29 at 2 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. #1 East at Navin Road. A private family interment will take place.
Thanks to Cancer Care Manitoba and the WRHA Palliative Care Program. Special thanks to Community Palliative Care nurses Shannon and Jamie, and the nurses and doctors at the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit.
Should friends wish, donations made to Cancer Care Manitoba in Doug’s memory would be gratefully appreciated.
