As a young girl, Katherine Schmidt was raised in Dysart, Saskatchewan until she was old enough to leave home. She worked for her living as a domestic at St. Boniface Hospital. She met and later married Daniel Exner on November 3, 1932.
The Exners’ lived in Winnipeg for most of their married life. Katherine and Daniel loved to share the little they earned through hard work.
Daniel died in 1987. Kay found his passing very difficult. She turned even more deeply to God and her church at Holy Cross. Her faith kept her strong to the very end. She especially loved to say her rosary each day and as she was dying the rosary was being prayed at Taché via the intercom…how fitting!
Katherine was a kind, loving, prayerful and generous person who loved receiving calls from her godchildren in Saskatchewan as well as an occasional visit from her nephews and nieces. She also enjoyed and welcomed other residents. Her appearance, therefore, had to be well groomed and well-dressed at all times. Red was her favorite color!
To live to be almost 101 (July 7) is a feat in itself but to live these long, years one day at a time, praising God and his mercies is indeed a precious gift.
We thank all the caregivers who made Kay’s daily grind as comfortable as possible; we are grateful to those visitors who cheered her lonely hours.
Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Cross Church on July 7th at 1:00 PM at Holy Cross Church, 252 Dubuc Street, Winnipeg.
