Betty J. Emily

Betty J. (Voyles) Emily, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 24, 2025, at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany. She was born on Feb. 12, 1932, in Hancock County, Kentucky, to the late Edward and Marie (Jarboe) Voyles at their farm. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Archie Emily. They were married on June 16, 1950, in Rockport, Indiana, by A.H. Phillips. She lived in their home in New Albany for 62 years until she moved to Bridgepointe Gardens in December.

Betty, known as “Mamaw Betty,” was a long-time member of Graceland Church, where she and Archie led the Sunday School bus ministry for several years. They also led Bible study at their home. She worked for many years as a seamstress, preferred yellow flowers in her bouquets, and doted on her grandchildren, frequently giving “coming over presents,” and, especially her great-grandchildren, reading to them or – to their delight – spinning them fast in a chair. Her favorite hymns were Because He Lives by Bill and Gloria Gaither and It Is No Secret by Stuart Hamblen. Both will be played at her funeral.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded by her brother, Paul Voyles, and her daughter-in-law, Cynthia (Obremski) Emily. Survivors include her son, Roger Emily, and his wife, Marsha of Charlestown, Indiana; her sister, Phyllis Stevens of Owensboro, Kentucky; granddaughter Jennifer Emily and her husband Jeff Mosier of Richardson, Texas; grandson Joshua Emily and his wife, Ashleigh, of Jeffersonville; grandson Jordan Emily and his wife, Lauren, of Tullahoma, Tennessee; step granddaughter, Meredith Woods, and her husband, Chris Howard, of Jeffersonville; her great grandchildren Caroline and Harper Mosier, Spencer and Ainsleigh Emily, and Archie Emily; step great grandchildren, Katarina Swain and her husband Dustin, and Piper and Rory Jaeger.

Memorial gifts can be offered to Graceland Church.

Visitation will be held at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana, from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, August 28, 2025
