

Daniel R. "Danny" Rakes Sr., 87, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Born on April 22, 1938, to Alvin and Beulah (Nance) Rakes, he lived a life marked by dedication, hard work, and a deep love for his family and community.
Danny met Mary “Kay” Sailer, the love of his life at Junior High School in 1952 and married in 1956 – together nearly 74 years. He embarked on a path that showcased his determination, strength, craftmanship skills, and work ethic. He worked at Reynolds Metals from 1957 until his retirement in 1996, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
Beyond his professional achievements, Danny was a successful gardener, spending countless hours nurturing his yard, enjoying the beauty of nature, and the fruits of his labor. He was passionate about Indiana Hoosiers basketball, running beagles, rabbit hunting, and caring for horses and cattle. He was especially known for creating a homestead where family and friends could gather around his table to enjoy each other’s company and create memories for a lifetime.
Danny had a strong commitment to those in need of help. Being known as a second father to some. A great man to many. He welcomed everyone to his home forging relationships that enriched his life and the lives of those he touched. Never giving up on anyone.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Sue Rakes, son, Daniel R. Rakes II; and his siblings Margaret “Maggie” Shuppert, James Rakes Sr., and Gary Rakes.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Kay Rakes; his
daughter, Karen Tweedy (Phillip); grandchildren, Tabitha Nalley (Kameron), Katie Hite (Phillip), Kevin Tweedy (fiancé Tabby), Daniel Rakes III (Brentlee), Erin Tweedy (fiancé Brice), and Lacy Hay (Andy); nine great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren
and his sisters, Caroline Akers, Marcella Adamo, Tina Ricketts; and his brother, Delbert Rakes.
Visitation will be held at Kraft Funeral Service, located at 2776 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, Indiana, 47150, on Monday, December 22, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The funeral service
will be December 23, 2025, at 12:00 p.m., at the funeral home with entombment to follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.
Danny’s legacy of love, hard work, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
