Mr. Calfee was one of my favorite teachers I have ever had. He allowed me to explore my creativity beyond a strict class assignment but more importantly, he gave me a lasting memory from a poem he quoted that has stuck with me. 

I not only recall it often but I include it in my own syllabus now to pass on to my students. He made me understand that "good enough is neither". 

I am so sorry to hear of his passing, but he will not be forgotten. 

Mrs. Calfee , Jodi and family:  So very sorry about your loss.  Really appreciate your teaching our children at the old Northside Christian Academy.  We  pray for the Lord’s peace and comfort in this difficult time.

Mr. Calfee, You will always be a favorite and one of the most influential people in my life. When I was a new transplant to Indiana (1977) as a middle schooler, you welcomed me both at school and at church (you and your family). The lessons you taught me were very foundational in my faith. You taught me about Jesus and how to walk with Him. You asked me questions and challenged me to make the lessons my own.... you were extremely patient always asking me questions which solidified my beliefs in my heart... enough to last a lifetime. He was  a great teacher. He was always cheerful, helpful, and easy to talk to you. Always smiling.  One of my favorite teachers.  My sincere condolences to the family. 

We were so sad to hear of Don’s passing. He was a wonderful guy and fellow teacher. One of my most wonderful memories is of Don painting  a portrait of our current house,  with each of our names and children’s names hidden  in the grass of the portrait.  It’s been on our wall for 30+ years.  He also did one of my daughter’s historic house in New Albany.  They have and will be treasured forever.   Prayers to all of his family. 😢❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻

Mr. Calfee was my art teacher for 3 years in high school and I have great memories of his classes.  He was a fantastic teacher, patient and truly shared his talents.  He always pushed us to explore our full potential.  He will be missed.  

Most of my adoration for art and the appreciation for art stemed from his lessons/visions. I would make sure to schedule myself into as many of his classes as allowed.  He was such a kind soul; he loved every single piece of artwork his students made. I have such fond memories of conversations with him- He will always be my favorite teacher- ❤  Rest easy, you were the coolest-  Mr.Calfee

I loved Mr. Calfee. He was my art teacher way back in Junior High and all the way through High School. He always provided such patient and kind guidance. He was definitely one of my very favorite teachers. 
I send prayers for his family.

Don greeted everyone he saw in the halls of Floyd Central with a smile or kind words. He was sincere  and respectful always both as a teacher and as a colleague. He is missed.


Years younger than Don, with family visits to the farm outside of Salem, he became an early "Super Hero"--someone to look up to.  Family, friends, students and colleagues also hold him in such high esteem.  Don was an artist on Canvas and in Life!  Glimmers of Don's goodness remain secure in my mind--

Mr. Calfee was my art teacher in high school. While I don’t consider myself artistic, through him I was able to really “see” art. It was his appreciation and love of art that influenced me to getting my BA in Art History. He is the man that led me to my fascination with Van Gogh - I will never forget the day he told me the story of Van Gogh cutting off his ear.  Mr. Calfee had the most sincere, honest, and gentle soul. I am honored my son shares his birthday. He will be missed and loved by all. 


He positively directed my life. His kindness and gentle nature were a comfort to me. His direction and confidence in me was pivotal.  He earned a great deal of respect from many FC students. I'm sorry for our loss. Rest in God's arms friend.

Mr. Calfee was one of my all time favorite teachers.  A great man. I loved his class. He made a difference. 

My sincerest condolences.   Mr. Calfee was truly a humble and gracious man.  Such an encouragement to my young and budding artistic children, as well as to me.  Praying for comfort and peace for Sue and the rest of the family.

Mr. Calfee taught my art class in high school. It was his influence that gave me the appreciation for art that I have today. I was able to see art through a different lens after his teaching. That was a truly great gift. He was very kind and cared for all of his students. He will be missed by many people. 

Mr. Calfee was my favorite teacher of all time! He taught me so much about art and life. He’s the reason I love art so much. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. 

I took Mr. Calfee's art class all four years of high school. He was my absolute favorite teacher at Floyd Central. He always had stories and the softest kindest heart. He helped me reach my potential in his class and never accepted less than your 100%. He had this beautiful drawing of hands on his wall that I always obsessed over. That drawing was how I learned to draw hands. My most favorite thing to draw still to this day was inspired by Mr Calfee. Love and peace sweet man ❤🕊

I loved having Mr. Calfee as a teacher so much! My senior year at FC I was in his class 4 periods. What a great mentor he was. He was not ashamed of his faith! God bless those he’s left behind. Prayers for you.

I'm so sorry to hear of Don's passing.  When I think of him, his smile and laugh instantly come to mind (not to mention his talent).  Glad to know he is whole again and with his Heavenly Father.  Praying for his family during this time.
