

Murphy, Gene A. ‘Spider’
82; of New Albany
A funeral Mass for Gene A. “Spider” Murphy, 82, of New Albany, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 25, at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Albany, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Albany. He died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services.
He was a New Albany native and graduate of New Albany High School and Louisiana State University where he lettered in both baseball and basketball. He was a teacher and coach for 37 years at Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville serving as dean of students for many of those years. He was an Army veteran and member of the Providence High School Booster Club, the LSU Alumni Association and Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Murphy; four sons, Mike Murphy and his wife, Giselle, of LaPlace, La., Patrick Murphy and his wife, Carol, Timothy Murphy and Thomas Murphy and his wife, Angela, all of New Albany; and grandchildren, Michael, Mark, Matthew, Madeleine, Daniel, Joseph, Sam, Luke, Megan, Maria and Tony.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Amelia Long Murphy; and his brothers, Carl “Shammy”, John and Pete Murphy.
Visitation will be at Kraft Funeral Service, Spring Street Chapel, New Albany, from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a remembrance service at 7:30 p.m.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Our Lady of Providence High School.
