Janet Marie Gohmann, 69, died Monday, May 14, 2018 at her home in New Albany. Janet was a devoted mother, spouse, “biyah” to her granddaughters, friend, aunt, teacher and sister. She will be remembered for the boundless energy and enthusiasm that she brought to her endeavors. Her friends and family will miss Janet’s leadership, creativity, passion, wisdom, courage and consummate planning. She was an accomplished artist, art therapist, and special education teacher. She cared deeply about the world around her, performed volunteer work and advocated for many causes including gender equality. She loved reading, camping, hiking, the arts and home improvement. She created a home that was warm and inviting and loved hosting friends and family. She was an explorer and sought out new experiences by planning family trips from Chile to Costa Rica, to Japan and beyond. She loved spending time with her children at their homes in Asheville and Seattle. Over her life she called many places home including New Albany, Cincinnati, Chicago, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Sheboygan. She is survived by her partner and husband of 46 years, Duane L.Bigelow; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Gohmann Bigelow and Christopher J. Woollcott; son and daughter-in-law, Mark Gohmann Bigelow and Lindsay P. Broughel; brothers, Charles L. Gohmann and his partner, Alejandro Martinez-Soto and John J. Gohmann and his wife, Cindy Derer; sister, Julie A. Gohmann and her husband, Stan Farrell; nieces, Emily and Elyse LaGarenne; two granddaughters whom Janet loved deeply and a third grandchild on the way whom she never met. A Celebration of Janet’s Life will be held from 1:00 pm ~ 4:00 pm Saturday May 19th at The Exchange Pub & Kitchen, 118 W. Main Street, New Albany, IN. The family is also planning a memorial for Janet in Chicago. Online condolences may be made to www.kraftfuneralservice.net.
