

Rex VanMeter, New Albany, passed away on December 7, 2025, at the age of 74. Rex was born in Leitchfield, Kentucky, on December 23, 1950, to the late Chester VanMeter and America (Carroll) VanMeter. Rex was a retired police officer after serving the Louisville Metro Police Department for 20 years. Rex was also a former Marine, through and through. He was a member of the local American Legion, River City Lodge FOP #614, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a recipient of the United Nations Civil Award. He was also known for serving his community in the Lincoln Heritage Council Cub Scouts, local food pantries, and homeless shelters. Rex married his lovely wife, Janat, in 2001. He was a friend to all. Rex enjoyed working out, hiking, visiting national parks, especially in the western states, as he was a history buff and loved Westerns. He loved being a papaw.
Rex is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Clyde VanMeter.
Rex is survived by his loving wife, Janat (Drake) VanMeter; his daughters, Carri (David) Francis, Emily Blevens, and Jill (Aaron) Maples; grandchildren, Morgan, Emma, Tripp, Reese, Adalyn, Josie, and Millie; a brother Johnny (Mary) VanMeter; a sister, Polly (Tom) Poole; and many extended family and friends.
The family asks for donations to be made to the Saint Labre Indian School, Wayside Christian Mission (Meals for the homeless), and The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.
