Nécrologie de Samuel Bowman Faulkner
Samuel Bowman Faulkner, 92 years of age, was born July 2, 1925 in Middlesboro, Kentucky. He graduated from Middlesboro High School and then joined the Navy, serving on the destroyer escort, George S. Johnson during World War II. He returned home to go to Emory University, and then transferred to University of Louisville after marrying his high school sweetheart, Lois Smith, also of Middlesboro, on June 12, 1947. He loved to travel: his father, Samuel A. Faulkner worked for the railroad, so he began traveling at an early age, continuing throughout his Navy career, and in his life afterwards. In 1970 he took Lois and their three children, Susan, Nancy, and Chris on a month long adventure “out West” in a Kingswood Estate station wagon. After he and Lois retired they traveled to all 50 states and Canada… usually by car. He chronicled their journeys by painting a map of the United States, to scale, on the basement wall and detailed all of their trips. He worked as a quality assurance manager for Pillsbury Co. which eventually brought him to Southern Indiana, settling in Clarksville where he and Lois lived in the same home for 50 years. He was a dedicated and active member of Morton Memorial United Methodist Church, and after he retired from Haas Cabinet Co. he went to the church every morning with his “punch list” of things that needed to be fixed. He and Lois also helped with the Community Kitchen and several other volunteer activities. Sam is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Lois, their three children, Susan Benner, Nancy Davis, and Chris Faulkner (Debbie), along with 6 grandchildren, Kate Hardy (Michael), Sam Faulkner, Jessica Mahanes, Kayla Benner, Andie Syzman (Josh), and Sydney Davis. He will be remembered for his unfailing kindness, his gentleness, his love of family, and will be greatly missed by those who loved and knew him Visitation will be from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm Friday at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana. His Funeral Service with military honors will be 3:00 pm Friday at the funeral home chapel with burial at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany, Indiana. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Online condolences may be made to www.kraftfs.com
