Evelyn S. Ponichtera

Born in New Bedford, December 5, 1923, daughter of the late Sophie (Glowacki) Piekut and Wital Piekut, wife of the late Joseph S. Ponichtera, mother to Mrs. Carol Stanfa and her husband Charles and Dr. Andrew J. Ponichtera and his wife Pamela, grandmother of seven grandchildren, great-grandmother of 8 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn lived in New Bedford for 83 years. For the past six years, she lived at Epoch Assisted Living in Norton, MA.

Mrs. Ponichtera graduated from New Bedford High School in January 1942. She became a registered nurse graduating from the Boston Children’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She served in the Army Nurse Corp during WWII. She worked as a Private Duty Nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital until 1966 when she went to work for the City of New Bedford as a Public Health Nurse until her retirement in 1989.

Mrs. Ponichtera was a member of the Alumni Association of Children’s Hospital, Friends of Poland, Polish American Veteran’s Association, Polish National Alliance and the Polish Senior Citizens Association.

She was an active member of the late St. Casimir’s Parish and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Mrs. Ponichtera served as an assistant Cub Scout Leader, a CCD teacher at St. Casimir (where she also served on various committees spanning 25+ years. She was a Eucharistic Minister at both church parishes and St. Luke’s Hospital. She was awarded the Marian Medal by the Fall River Diocese in 1995.

Mrs. Ponichtera enjoyed spending time with her family and was an exceptional cake decorating artist for them.

Her Funeral will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 9am at the ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford, followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 235 North Front Street, New Bedford. Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting Hours will be held Monday, December 17, 2012 from 2-5pm.
