Henry Laurent Benoit, affectionately known as 'Handsome Hank,' passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at the age of 78 in New Bedford. His passing followed a period of declining health. He was the devoted husband of Julie (Sequeira) Benoit, with whom he shared 33 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Acushnet, Hank was the son of the late Roland and Rolande (Guillotte) Benoit. He lived in Acushnet for many years before moving to New Bedford. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School, Class of 1964.
Hank proudly served in the Massachusetts National Guard from 1965 to 1971. He completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and furthered his training in artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Hank served with the 211th Artillery Battalion as an assistant gunner on a 105mm and later with the military police in Buzzards Bay. He was a skilled sharpshooter.
Hank, along with his brother, co-owned New Bedford Wire and Iron Works from 1973 to 1998, and he later owned Fence-Mend from 1998 to 2007 until his retirement. His iron railing and fence work still grace countless homes and businesses throughout the city.
Hank was lovingly called by many names, including Handsome Hank, Hanky Panky, and Hank Lover Benoit. He was a prankster and the life of every party, always bringing laughter to those around him. He was a kind, loving, thoughtful, and generous individual. Music held a special place in his heart, and he often created CDs for friends and family. Hank was known for donating 100 gallons of heating oil to families in need, ensuring they stayed warm. He had a passion for attending concerts and shows at the Melody Tent. Hank had a deep appreciation for nature, especially trees, and enjoyed tending to his beautiful yard. He was an ardent sports fan and avidly cheered for the New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and Boston Red Sox. Hank was also a committed blood donor. He served as a father figure and second Dad to many. As a devout Christian, Hank lived his life in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.
Hank is survived by his loving wife, Julie, five sons, one daughter, and six grandchildren. He was the brother of five siblings and had numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
