Herbert was born on August 9, 1937, in New Bedford, the cherished son of the late Virgino Vieira and Edith (Amaral) Vieira. From the very beginning, he carried a quiet strength and kind heart that would define his life and the way he touched the lives of others.
Herbert was a devoted husband. For 59 years, he shared a deep and enduring love with his wife, Lillian J. (Pelletier) Vieira. Their life together was a testament to partnership, laughter, patience, and unwavering support—a bond that brought joy to all who knew them.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Herbert answered the call to serve his country with honor and courage. After his time in the military, he continued his life of service close to home as a dedicated police officer with the New Bedford Police Department. In every role he held, Herbert served with integrity, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility. He was respected by his colleagues and loved by the community he protected—a guardian in every sense of the word.
Herbert’s love for life was reflected in the simple joys that brought him peace and happiness. He was an avid animal lover, finding comfort and companionship in the gentle presence of his furry friends. The open road called to him—and Herbert answered, often seen riding his motorcycle with a free spirit and a gleam in his eye. He was a passionate classic car enthusiast, delighting in the beauty and craftsmanship of timeless automobiles and the camaraderie of his car club friends. On warm afternoons, Herbert could often be found sunbathing in his backyard, content in the sunshine and stillness, savoring moments of quiet reflection.
