Joan Ann Ostiguy Durant

Joan Ann (Ostiguy) Durant, age 76, of New Bedford died Saturday, August 29, 2015 under hospice care with Community Nurse from a very aggressive form of cancer. She was the wife of John Durant with whom she celebrated 55 years of marriage on May 21st. She was also predeceased by her daughter Lori Ann Durant on November 20, 2013.

Joan was born in New Bedford to the late Wilfred L. and Anne (Taylor) Ostiguy, and was a lifelong resident of the city. She graduated from New Bedford High School in 1957 and worked for several years at the Keystone Furniture Store and Aerovox before becoming a devoted homemaker.

She enjoyed roller skating and was the biggest fan of her children who excelled in the sport. She was an animal lover and advocate whose backyard was registered with the National Wildlife Habitat as a preserved sanctuary for birds in flight. She supported many animal and autobahn associations and loved her cats and dog, Sassy.

In addition to her husband she leaves a son, Michael J. Durant and a granddaughter, Taylor Ann Durant both of New Bedford; two brothers, Robert Ostiguy of Fairhaven and Wilfred L. Ostiguy Jr. of New Bedford and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial visiting hours to which relatives and friends are invited will be held on Tues., Sept. 15, 2015 from 2 to 4 pm in the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford with a Memorial Service at 4pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Joan’s memory to your local animal shelter.
