

Louis (Nicholas) C. Gomes, 86 of Acushnet and Dennisport, MA died after a brief illness on June 29, 2017. Born in New York City, son of the late Louis C. Gomes Sr. and Lucy Da Silva Gomes. Mr. Gomes spent his childhood and completed his early education in the Bronx, New York.
Mr. Gomes graduated from Sacred Hearts College earning a Bachelor degree in Philosophy. He later completed 4 years of graduate studies at Queens of Peace Seminary in New Hampshire, earning a Masters Degree in Theology. Mr. Gomes was ordained into the Priesthood in 1957. He then served briefly as the editor of the Social Reign in Washington DC and as Assistant Pastor of Our Lady of Victory Church in Rochester, New York.
Father Gomes was stationed at St. Francis Xavier Church in Acushnet for seven years and served as Assistant Pastor. He was Director of St. Francis Xavier School and the Catholic Youth Organization at the Parish. Among Fr. Gomes accomplishments was the planning and building of the Parish new elementary school. Father Gomes left the Priesthood in 1971.
He was later employed as Director of Social Services for the Federal Head Start Program, servicing the City of Brockton and 20 outlaying towns for seven years. Mr. Gomes accepted a new position as the first Executive Director for the Elmwood Multi-Service Center in Providence, RI. His appointment by the Board of Directors was to initiate new and develop programming services for the elderly and youth and to provide Social Services for the Elmwood neighborhood.
He leaves his loving companion, Alice Soja, a sister Pearl Boland of Forest Hills, NY and his late sister Elaine Frerks of Colchester, VT and his late brother Richard Gomes of Palm Springs, FL. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church in Acushnet on July 5, 2017 at 10 a.m.. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
