Patricia (Duffy) Gurney, 89, of East Freetown, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at her home. She was the wife of the late David J. Gurney. Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Irene (Barlow) Duffy. Patricia had been a resident of East Freetown since 1964.
She grew up in Bakerville, where her father made ice cream and delivered milk for Gulf Hill Dairy; vanilla was her favorite flavor. Her mother taught her the art of baking. Patricia fondly recalled her time working at Star Store, where she produced receipts for customers delivered by pneumatic tube.
A graduate of the former St. Luke's School of Nursing, class of 1955, she met her husband at the Seekonk Speedway (he was a rebel). She had a successful and fulfilling career as a registered nurse, working for Dr. Edward Lund at Pediatric Associates in New Bedford.
Patricia made many dear friends through her church and volunteered as the organist at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where she was also a long-time choir member.
She is survived by her sons, Jonathan A. Gurney and Eric S. Gurney; daughter-in-law, Lynn Gurney; five grandchildren: Jennifer Auld, Megan Edwards, Erin Jordan, Chelsea Gurney, and Grace Gurney; and eight great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. Patricia was preceded in death by her son, Bruce D. Gurney, and her brother, John Duffy.
A funeral service will be held on June 29th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 136 Rivet St., New Bedford. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the church in Patricia’s memory would be appreciated.
