Born in Framingham, Richard was the beloved son of the late Albert F. and Ruth (Steinfeldt) Scherbarth. He was the devoted husband of Pamela Bailey Scherbarth, with whom he shared eight wonderful years of marriage.
Richard was a proud graduate of Framingham North High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. He dedicated his life to public service, building a distinguished career as a Firefighter and Paramedic for over four decades. Richard began his career with COMM Fire on January 5, 1985, as a Firefighter/EMT-P. His commitment and leadership led to his promotion to Lieutenant on March 15, 1991, and later to EMS Officer on October 2, 2006. He was a certified car seat installer, a proud member of the Honor Guard, and served on the IAFF Local 2346 Executive Board from 1987 to 1997. He concluded his dedicated service with COMM Fire upon his resignation on November 4, 2013.
In addition to his time at COMM Fire, Richard also served the community of Mattapoisett working as a Paramedic for ten years with Mattapoisett Police & EMS, as well as with Brewster Ambulance for another decade. He also briefly served the Town of Marion, with Marion Fire & EMS serving the position of Lieutenant/ EMS supervisor. Throughout his career, as a provider and educator, he touched countless lives with his skill, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard embraced life fully. He loved traveling and camping, meeting new people, and striking up conversations with just about anyone—always making others feel comfortable and welcome. He found simple joy in washing his car, dining out, working in the yard, cooking on the smoker or the grill and filling his home with the sounds of country music and Motown. He was happiest being outdoors and especially near or on the ocean. In his younger years, he was an accomplished athlete, serving as captain of his soccer team and pitcher for his baseball team through Little League and into college. He especially cherished time spent with his four beloved cats; Olivia, Sophia, Timmy and Gus and traveling with his wife.
In addition to his loving wife, Pamela, Richard is survived by his children: Meghan Davis and her husband Patrick of Georgia; Courtney Nastasia and her husband Nicholas of Georgia; Isabella Scherbarth of Rockport, Massachusetts. He was the grandfather of Levi Nastasia and his twin brother, Caden, and Tillman Davis. He is also survived by his brother, Douglas Scherbarth of California, and his step-sons, Nicholas DeCastro of Hopedale and Jonas DeCastro of New Bedford.
Richard’s infectious smile, bright blue eyes, warm heart, sense of humor, calm nature and steadfast dedication to his family, friends, and community will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
