

Bartolo John Spano, 87, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, September 2nd, 2021, following a brief illness. He was born in Courtland, New York but found a second home in New Bern, North Carolina.
A graduate of the University of Florida, he received his PhD. in clinical psychology and practiced at several college counseling centers and mental health clinics. He served as the Director of Neuse Mental Health at the St. Luke Hospital Center before his retirement in 2001.
He volunteered at Merci Clinic, Hope Clinic, CarolinaEast Health Center, St. Paul Catholic School and Craven County Elementary Schools.
He was a devoted parishioner of St. Paul Catholic Church and was a member of the third and fourth degree Knights of Columbus and served as the Grand Knight from 2002-2003. He also served as a greeter at Old St. Paul Catholic Church during Friday services.
His leisure activities included flying his private piper arrow airplane, traveling, motorcycling and caring for his family of dogs.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Petrella Spano; two sons; four grandsons; several nieces and nephews; several close cousins; and godsons, David Bowers of Roanoke, VA and David Yarusso of St. Paul, MN.
The family will receive friends in the atrium of St. Paul Catholic Church from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 10th, 2021 to be followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 10 a.m. in the Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Paul Catholic School, or to St. Jude Hospital for Children.
