Brian Patrick Kearney set sail on his final voyage on March 22, 2026, leaving behind a legacy as vast and deep as the ocean he so dearly loved. While many knew him as a master of his craft and a leader in his community, those closest to him knew a man whose heart was even larger than his presence at the helm.
A proud United States Navy Veteran, Brian served with honor during the Vietnam conflict. It was on the decks of Navy vessels that he first forged his connection to the sea and developed the discipline and quiet strength that would define the rest of his life.
Upon returning home, Brian became a Steamfitter by trade; a man of strong hands and a brilliant, practical mind. He took immense pride in the precision of his work, but his true "office" remained the open water. A lifelong sailor, Brian was never more himself than when he was feeling the spray of salt air and the steady pull of the wind against the sails.
His tenure as Commodore of the Miramar Yacht Club was born not from a desire for a title, but from a genuine love for his fellow sailors and the traditions of the sea. Whether in the Navy or at the club, he was the steady hand the community looked to, a mentor to many, a protector of the harbor, and a friend to everyone who walked the docks.
Beyond the rigging and the blueprints, Brian’s greatest joy was found in the people he loved. Later in his years he spent the majority of his time in North Carolina surrounded by friends who became family. He was a man who spoke his affection through reliability and resilience; he made everyone feel safe in his wake. He taught those he loved that no matter how rough the seas might get, with a clear heading and a steady heart, you can navigate anything.
Brian’s memory will be forever cherished by his children, Brian, Karyn, and Jason, and the countless friends who were lucky enough to call him a brother of the sea. His legacy of strength and kindness lives on through his beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Emily, Leila, Wyatt, Emma, and Ellie, and great grandson Bronson who were the light of his later years.
He now joins those who went before him in a place where the winds are always fair and the sun never sets on the horizon.
"Fair winds and following seas, Brian. You have reached your final harbor, and your light will continue to guide us home."
A visitation will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, April 4th, 2026 at Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory. A celebration of life will be at 1:00 pm in the Chapel at Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
