Donald Jack Bartel

Donald “Don” J. Bartel, passed away on January 28, 2015. He was born on February 6, 1930 in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He grew up in the Washington, DC area and lived there until 1994 when he and his wife Lucille moved to New Bern, NC.

Don was a U.S. Army veteran, a retired Metropolitan DC K9 Police Officer, a retired K9 trainer for the Smithsonian Institute and a member of Riverdale United Methodist Church. Prior to retirement, Don was an active member of the Blue Lodge of the Free Masons as well as several other Masonic organizations. After retirement, he still enjoyed training police dogs, watching his favorite Redskins and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Mary Lucille Bartel, his daughter, Karen Drumm and husband Robert of Mt. Pleasant, SC and his beloved grandsons, Kenneth Casteel, Esquire of Charlotte, NC and Corey R. Drumm of Mt. Pleasant, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport, NC 28570 or to Riverdale United Methodist Church 5195 Hwy. 70 East, New Bern, NC 28562.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm Monday, February 2, 2015, followed by his funeral service at 2:00 pm, both at Riverdale United Methodist Church, 5195 Hwy. 70 East, New Bern, NC. Burial will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
