

He was born April 6, 1943 in New Bern, NC to the now deceased Stephen and Dorothy Stephenson, and was the younger brother to surviving sister, Delores Stephenson Ballard of Charlotte, NC. He graduated from New Bern High School in 1961 and served in the US Air Force from 1963-1967. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Patricia Eubanks Stephenson. For 56 years they raised their children and had a wonderful marriage. Their surviving children are Edward Vann Stephenson Jr. (Amy) of Greenville, NC, John Herbert Stephenson of Wilmington, NC, and April Stephenson Totten (Archie) of Carroll, OH. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Haley Winslow-Stephenson (Walker), Conrad Totten IV, Edward Stephenson, Brandon Totten, and Garrett Totten.
During his life, Van was an active member at Broad St. Christian Church, and worked most of his career for New Bern Building Supply. He enjoyed reading, and wood-working in his shop. Van and his wife were founding members of the New Bern Civic Theater. Van performed the staring role of Charlie in the civic theatres first performance “Charlie’s Aunt”.
He was a member of the New Bern Shrine Club, Masonic Lodge and New Bern Elks Lodge, where he held the position of president. In his later years, he sang for the Southern Gentlemen Chorus.
Big Van was a kind man, who was known for his witty humor along with his eagerness to have uplifting conversations with everyone. He spent much of his time socializing with his friends and neighbors and playing Rummikub. He often told his family that he loved them and that he was proud of them.
A visitation will be held at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern, NC on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 1 pm, followed by a funeral service at 2 pm. He will be laid to rest at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Craven County Hospice.
