James Wilson Lee, age 85, of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026, in Newport, North Carolina. Born on February 11, 1941, in Smithfield, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Albert and Ailene Lee.
James spent his early years working alongside his father on a tobacco farm in Johnston County, where he cultivated a strong work ethic that remained with him throughout his life. A mechanical genius with an extraordinary talent for diesel engines, James had an unmatched ability to diagnose and repair engines simply by listening to them. His passion for motorsports was evident in his love for drag racing. He achieved great success with his beloved 1969 Roadrunner, which he built and customized himself, earning numerous trophies over the years.
Beyond his love for engines and racing, James cherished time spent fishing with his oldest son, Donnie. These shared moments on the water reflected the deep bond between father and son. Above all else, James loved the Lord and his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
James met his wife Barbara on a blind date in Johnston County. Their connection was immediate, and they quickly fell in love and married. Barbara became the center of James's world. Now reunited in heaven, they walk hand in hand once more.
James is survived by his sons Donnie Lee and Tony Lee (Faith); granddaughters Morgan Lee Clontz (Taylor) and Haley Fulcher (Jared); great-grandchildren Everett Clontz, Dallas Clontz, Daisy Clontz, and Charlee Fulcher; and many others whose lives he touched. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Danny Lee; and his sisters Bernice Driver and Alice Parrish.
James's legacy of hard work, ingenuity, faith, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing.
