Leaving behind to honor and cherish Jim's life, legacy, and memories are his devoted wife of 60 years, Claudia McManamey; children Dawn Barbee, Tara Howry, and Ian McManamey; and siblings Ken McManamey, Julie Lang, and Donald McManamey.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret Swigert, and son Shaun McManamey.
Jim, as he preferred to be called, dedicated his career to teaching mathematics and computer science at the high school and community college and working as a physical scientist for the US Army at Fort Belvoir and the Army Research Lab. He was an active, committed member of his local church where he served at various times as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. Most recently, Jim joined the Gideons, eager to share God’s Word and support its ministry. Throughout his life, Jim generously gave his time to serve the community, including Boy Scouts and leading a Go Club for elementary school students. He will be remembered as a life-long learner, a man of intelligence, integrity, and humility who enjoyed reading, photography, writing, drawing, chess, Go, and astronomy.
The family will receive visitors from 1:00-200 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at First Baptist Church. A celebration of life service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Richard Seagle officiating. Following the service, Jim will be laid to rest at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in honor of Jim to The Gideons International at www.gideons.org
Cotten Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and friends of James "Jim" Robert McManamey.
