Kathy possessed a special perspective on life, often seeing things differently than those around her. Though she was unable to have children of her own, her nurturing spirit found an expansive outlet. She became a beloved second mother to her nieces and nephews, and later, her great-nieces and great-nephews. All the children in her family found in Kathy a constant source of love, support, and guidance, always welcoming her as their "second Mom."
Her heart held a special place for animals. Kathy was a devoted pet owner, and true to her favorite number, she consistently had seven cherished pets by her side.
Beyond her nurturing and compassionate nature, Kathy was a woman of diverse talents and intellect. She achieved the rank of brown belt in Taekwondo, demonstrating her discipline and strength. Her thirst for knowledge led her to earn multiple associate degrees, including one with a major in chemistry. Driven by her passion for animals, she always held a strong desire to become a veterinarian. Kathy also proudly served her country as a member of the United States Navy.
Kathy is survived by her loving husband, Thurman Simmons; her parents, Barbara and Roy Leavenworth; her sisters, Bobbie Jo Bailey (Kim Duncan), Billie Jo Chase (Eric Deshane), and Sonnie Jo Young (Richard); and many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her nephew, Michael Bailey.
Kathy Jo Leavenworth Simmons will be deeply missed by all who were touched by her unique spirit, her boundless love for her family and animals, and her unwavering individuality.
In memory of Kathy, please consider these heartfelt words:
When the lights go down and I take my final rest, remember who I was and the legacy I left. Know I loved you all with all my heart and it was not my choice to so early depart. Although I left before we were ready to say goodbye, I will always be with you whenever you remember my smile. Please keep me in your hearts as I kept you in mine, until we meet again in time. - Melody Powers
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 9th at 4:00 PM at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern, North Carolina.
