

This world has lost a kind, sweet spirit who was loved by many and will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
She was born February 9th, 1944, to Nathan and Mildred Thompson at St. Lukes Hospital in New Bern, NC. She graduated from New Bern High School in 1962 and went on to attend East Carolina College earning her master's degree in education. She was very active in her sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, holding the position of president during her college years. She then began her teaching career at Bangert Elementary School teaching 3rd grade for 30 years where she was admired by students and coworkers alike. She also tutored countless children helping them achieve their educational goals. She was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she has attended services throughout her life. She was also generous with both her time and resources within the community of New Bern.
She and Dennis traveled early in their marriage seeing a lot of beautiful places in the world, but Martha's heart was always at home in New Bern.
She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Dennis Leoni and his children Curtis Leoni and wife Robin and Lisa Bailey and husband Britt. She is also survived by her brother Andy Thompson and wife Nancy and their children Ashley Vallejo, Karen McCammon, Stuart Thompson and 5 great nephews. She had 4 grandchildren Jayme Burleson and husband Travis, Chase Bailey, Ben and Carson Leoni and 1 Great grandson Wolfe Burleson.
A celebration of Martha's life will be held at Centenary United Methodist in New Bern on January 8th, 2026 at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall.
