Mildred (Cherry) Jackson, age 90, passed away May 22,2025 at CarolinaEast Medical Center. She is preceded in death by her parents, Amacey Cherry and Jessie (Jackson) Cherry and her husband, Daniel Walker Jackson. In addition, Mildred is preceded in death by 3 sisters, Ann, Hazel, Faye and 1 brother, Seth.
Danny and Mildred were married in 1959 and shared 60 years together. They traveled and loved spending time at their river home in Pamlico county. Many great memories were made there with friends and family. Mildred also loved having fur babies around…sometimes 2 at a time.
Mildred went to Old Ford School (1st-9th grade) then to Washington High School where she graduated in 1952. She went to work for Carolina Telephone Company where she worked the switch board, later moving to the long distance service and soon became a supervisor. Mildred retired after 41 years with Carolina Telephone which later became Century Link.
In her younger years, Mildred enjoyed needle point, crochet, cross stitching and working in her flower beds but she most enjoyed cooking. She was always baking or cooking for family and friends. She was very well known for her homemade sourdough bread, cheese wafers, crab balls, salty pecans and muffins.
Mildred has always been a member of the Christian Church. During her younger life she was a member at Old Ford Christian Church and once she moved to New Bern she moved her membership to Broad Street Christian Church in 1974 and became an active member with Christian Women’s Fellowship. Mildred loved her Heavenly Father and was happy to share that love with others. She was a woman of strong faith and an example to many on how to never give up….always trusting in God.
Mildred will leave a great void in the hearts of many she has touched. A special thanks to CarolinaEast Medical Center Emergency Department, especially to Heather Cain, James Galloway and Dr. Koonz. Your caring support and compassion is greatly appreciated.
A service for Mildred will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025 at Greenleaf Memorial Park at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Broad Street Christian Church, 802 Broad Street, New Bern, NC or Colonial Capital Humane Society at 1860 Old Airport Rd., New Bern, NC, 28562.
