

Chick was born in Kinston, NC on September 8, 1929 to Milton H. Askew Sr. and Sarah Chadwick Askew. He was raised in Pollocksville, NC and moved to New Bern in 1949 after marrying Anna Lancaster of New Bern. After serving in the Korean War, Chick came back to New Bern to begin his career with Askew’s Hardware and Building Supply. There he worked with his father and then later went on to work with his son, Rick until his retirement in 1995.
Chick was preceded in death by his parents and wife Anna. Surviving are his children M.H. Askew III (Rick) and his wife Karen of Pine Knoll Shores, Kathryn E. Askew of Raleigh, and Susan A. Lansche and her husband Edmund of New Bern. Pappy was adored by his 4 grandchildren Hart Askew (Lauren) of New Bern, Frank Askew (Kathleen) of Hendersonville, Anna L. Mommsen (Matt) of Asheville and Ryan Lansche of New Bern; two great granddaughters Leigh and Alice of Hendersonville, NC.
Chick’s passions were his family, his friends and his work. Chick loved to travel and was fortunate to be able to travel extensively with the one, true love of his life – Anna. He also enjoyed hunting and spending days at the beach or on a boat.
Chick joined Christ Episcopal Church in New Bern when marrying Anna and served on the Vestry in earlier years.
Chick was a longtime member of the New Bern Rotary Club, he was raised a Mason in the Doric Lodge in 1953, and became a Shriner in 1955. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge and served as a Board member of First Citizen Bank and Trust of New Bern.
Family will receive friends Sunday March 22, 2015 from 6-8 PM at Cotten Funeral Home. Memorial Service will be Monday March 23, 2015 at 11:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church, with burial in the Church Cemetery to follow.
