Norman Martin Ray, 60, passed away on Monday, December 18th quietly in his home in New Bern. Norman was born March 15th, 1963 in Beaufort, South Carolina to his devoted mother Kathleen Martin Ray. Named after his uncle and grandfather, he carried a strong legacy of family throughout his life with his adoring mother, beloved, late father Roy Lee Ray, and younger sister Regina Ray Eborn.
An avid fisherman, woodworker and proud Life Member of the NRA, he was certified as a Master Craftsman by the state of North Carolina. Affectionately known to many as “Stormin’ Norman,” he left his mark on friends at Havelock High School where he graduated in 1981 after meeting his wife of 36 years, Gina Coulson Ray. Together they raised four loving children through thick and thin.
A hardworking father, above all else, he is survived by his creative daughters Megan Ray Werbicki and Kristi Ray Frennea, talented sons Jesse Eugene Ray and Wyatt Martin Ray, two son-in laws, and two young grandchildren— Owen Peter Werbicki and River Ray Frennea. His doting mother Kathie and his caring aunt Suzanne showed up for him with unconditional love until his dying day.
Norman loved to cut a rug and will be remembered fondly for his “happy feet.” He was a patient teacher and skilled electrician; a proud patriot who could fix almost anything. He was a headstrong patriarch that will be missed dearly by his extended family and lifelong friends.
A small service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, December 28th at 2pm at Croatan Presbyterian Church. A visitation with the family in the fellowship hall to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to sponsor a local resident on their sobriety journey at Realize U 252.
Cotten Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and friends of Norman Martin Ray.
