Renate Charlotte (Sonntag) Mey

Renate “Reni” Charlotte Mey, age 80, passed away peacefully at her home while surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 7, 2022. She was the only child born to the late Walter and Charlotte Sonntag on January 5, 1942 in Passaic, New Jersey.

She moved to New Bern, NC in 2009 from Middletown, NJ to get away from the over-crowding, high taxes, and of course, snow. While in NJ, she was employed by the Middletown Township Board of Education for close to 30 years. She started as a secretary in the Information Office, followed by secretary to the Principal, and finally as Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools before retiring.

Renate is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Adrien P. Mey, who passed in August 2021. For decades, they both enjoyed boating with friends, going on cruises, and experiencing the thrills of attending NASCAR races with pit row access, mingling with well-known drivers. Renate was particularly fond of her extended stays in the Florida Keys.

She was a devout and faithful parishioner of St Andrew Lutheran Church, enjoyed spending time with dear friends at the Elks Club, local restaurants and the New Bern County Club. She also had a passion for cooking, putting her culinary talents on display during family gatherings.

Renate is survived by her two sons, Roger A. Mey and Gary P. Mey, daughter-in-laws Mary Goertz-Mey and Tabitha Mey all from New Jersey and a cherished Grandmom of Kristen and Marissa Mey, both currently of Orlando, Florida.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, May 12th at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 1605 Neuse Blvd., New Bern with a burial next to her beloved husband at St. Joseph Cemetery on 3005 Country Club Rd, New Bern. A small reception at St. Paul Catholic Church will be held immediately following the burial. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a charity of your choice in Renate’s honor.
