Susan Brinson Howard

The wife of Bennie Howard, Jr., she was born on September 16, 1928 to T. Wallace Brinson and Kathryn Thomas Brinson in Beaufort, NC., the fourth of six girls. At the age of two, her family moved back to New Bern. She graduated from New Bern High School in 1945, Mars Hill Junior College in 1947 and East Carolina Teachers College in 1949. She taught school in Scotland Neck, Brinson Memorial Elementary in New Bern, and Northwoods Elementary in Cary, NC. She retired after 25 years in June, 1986. Susan and Bennie were married in June, 1951. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Lila B. Taylor, her brothers in-law, Charles F. Taylor,Douglas Henshaw and Ernest L. Bender, Jr.

Susan is survived by her husband of 61 years, Bennie Howard, Jr., her son, Bennie Howard, III and wife Tammy and their daughter Sarah Brinson Howard of Atlanta, GA; her daughter, Catherine H. Holleman and husband Mark of Winston Salem, NC; four sisters, Helen B. Henshaw of Morristown, NJ; Catherine B. Bender, Doris B. Maple and husband Bob, all of New Bern; Patsy B. Burwell and husband John of Winston Salem, NC; and their families. She is also survived by a brother in-law, N. H. Hodges, Jr. and his family of Charlotte, NC.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on Sunday, August 26, 2012 at Centenary United Methodist Church with Rev. Susan Pate Greenwood and Rev. Brian Huffman officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the church parlor. Inurnment will be held at Greenmount Cemetery in Wendell, NC at a later date.
