

Through the years, Allen had worked for the City of New Bern as well as New Bern Oil & Fertilizer Company but was best known for his work as an insurance agent with Southern Life, which later became Liberty Life. He loved the Lord with all of his heart and was a faithful member of New Covenant Church in New Bern for almost 60 years. His commitment to serving the Lord was an inspiration to many and he often encouraged others in the faith with the words, “Keep on keeping on.”
Allen is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Hope Mercer; his children, Crystal Elaine Mercer (Kenneth), Deborah Gaye Carpenter (Marty), Timothy Allen Mercer (Jill), and Walter Thomas Mercer (Melissa); his sister, Pat Mallard; his grandchildren, Bryant Wallace, Joshua Wallace, Rodney Ormond, Noelle Carpenter, Kenny Mercer, Emily Gunn, Samantha Melvin, Alanna Morris, and Lauren Ciampi; as well as nineteen great grandchildren.
For those who wish to pay their respects, viewing hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Cotten Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at New Covenant Church. A memorial service will follow the time of visitation at 12:00 p.m. officiated by his pastor, Rev. Benjamin Britt and Chaplain Jacob Snider.
Allen will be laid to rest in a private ceremony for the family at the Banks Cemetery near Trenton with Rev. Rex Bennett officiating.
